Global accommodation prices plummet

Dertour has released its 2020 Hotel Price Index, which compares rates at three-, four- and five-star hotels and vacation homes in 75 destinations with 2019 costs. The study shows that holiday accommodation prices have dropped by more than 17% on average between 2019 and 2020 due to the effect of COVID-19 on the hotel industry.

The study found that Amsterdam showed the biggest decrease in pricing since last year, with a drop of 51,6%. San Francisco prices have dropped by 39,2%, Vancouver by 37,1%; Bangkok by 34,6%; Phuket by 33,8%; Barcelona by 32,1%; Miami by 31,3%; New York by 31,3%; Moscow by 29,3% and Rio de Janeiro by 28,8%.

Marrakech showed a 15,5% increase in accommodation cost, while Abu Dhabi accommodation prices rose by 6,8%; Delhi by 4,6% and Singapore by 4,5%.

According to the study, the least expensive accommodation options available can currently be found in Phuket, Delhi and Kuala Lumpur, while the most expensive are in Zurich, Los Angeles and New York.
