Greek firefighters battled over 30 wildfires since Monday, on the Peloponnese Peninsula and the islands of Kythira, Thassos, Kos and Chios as well as on Crete.
The popular island destinations of Kos and Chios had to evacuate hundreds of tourists and locals from their hotels and homes on Tuesday, reports reuters.com.
The Kos and Chios fires broke out on Monday afternoon and Crete's on Tuesday. The island of Thassos, on Thessaloniki's coastline, experienced two fires due to extreme lightning on Wednesday, reports independent.co.uk.
Greece's civil protection service has issued a warning that due to ongoing lightning storms and dry weather, there is a possibility of more fires until Thursday.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis warned this week of a dangerous summer of wildfires following a prolonged drought and unusually high winds for the season.
