Heathrow opens birdwatching tower

Heathrow has unveiled a unique birdwatching hide shaped like the Heathrow air traffic control tower as the airport makes a push to promote biodiversity and sustainability.

Located in the Causeway Nature Reserve – one of the airport’s 13 conservation sites – the birdwatching tower offers visitors a chance to spot local wildlife while learning about Heathrow’s new Nature Positive Plan.

Heathrow currently manages the biodiversity of 170ha of land, home to more than 4 000 species.

The reserve features reedbeds, lakes, woodlands and meadows where visitors might encounter kingfishers, barn owls, rare butterflies, grass snakes and Britain’s rarest native tree, the Black Poplar.

The birdwatching tower is free to visit via a guided, bookable tour. Tours can be booked via www.eventbrite.co.uk.
