Hola Mexico!

Emirates has announced an expansion of its codeshare agreement with United to include nine destinations in Mexico, including Mexico City.

This means that from September 14, South Africans who would like to get to Cancun, Cozumel, Monterrey, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, San Jose Del Cabo, Leon/Guanajuato, and Queretaro will be able to do so by flying to Dubai and then continuing onwards to Chicago or Houston to connect to the Mexican end-destination.

Mexico has a broad and deep tourism offering – Mayan ruins, gorgeous beaches, colonial cities, and lush jungles are all in the mix. It is a country with a rich history and culture, and a vibrant culinary scene. It’s perfect for travellers who are looking for a relaxing beach vacation, an adventure-filled hiking trip, or a cultural immersion experience.

Cancun and Cozumel, an island off Cancun, have beautiful beaches, clear waters, and snorkelling and diving. There are also several Mayan ruins near both centres. The city of Monterrey gives access to the nearby Sierra Madre mountains and the Chipinque Ecological Park.

Guadalajara, Mexico’s second largest city, is known for its colonial architecture and Mexican traditions, like pottery production, mariachi music, and tequila.

San Jose Del Cabo is a beach resort town in the Baja California Sur region of Mexico, well-known for its beautiful beaches, golf courses, and spas. Other activities include whale watching, hiking, and fishing in the Sea of Cortez.

The codeshare network between Emirates and United currently includes a host of US cities and Mexico becomes the first country outside the US to be added to the growing network.

Emirates says the codeshare partnership also provides more flexibility on flight timings, giving Emirates customers flying to Mexico City more options when choosing flights. “Depending on travel plans, passengers can opt to fly to the Mexican capital using Emirates daily services from Dubai with a stop in Barcelona, or separately book codeshare flights to Mexico City.”

The addition of the new points in Mexico means that the enhanced codeshare network now includes 134 destinations accessible from United’s gateways in the US.  An interline agreement covers 100 more points across the US, Canada, Central and South America and the Caribbean.

Members of Emirates’ frequent flyer programme, Emirates Skywards, can look forward to earning and redeeming miles on flights of both airlines if booked as codeshare flights.

International travellers flying to destinations in Mexico on the Emirates and United codeshare flights must clear their baggage with US Customs at the first point of entry (ie Chicago or Houston).
