Hurtigruten, the Norwegian cruise operator, has introduced a special 12-day Voyage of the Vikings, sailing from Bergen in Norway on October 13.

The cruise takes guests to Kirkenes on the Russian border and back to Bergen, with visits to Kristiansund, the Lofoten Peninsula and Norway’s Seven Sisters mountain range.

Also included in the trip is a visit to the Lofotr Viking Museum for a traditional dinner and performance, as well as a journey to the medieval Trondenes Church outside Harstad. The cruise coincides with the Northern lights season, promising guests an opportunity to watch the natural phenomenon, with further opportunities for activities such as dog-sledding and snowshoeing.

Dr John Haywood, an expert in medieval and maritime history will give a range of lectures during the cruise on topics including the Vikings and their gods, the Viking warrior and the Viking North Atlantic Saga.
