ICAO: Aviation safety improved

18 Sep 2024
Comments | 0

In 2023 the fatality rate on scheduled commercial flights dropped to 17 people per billion passengers, compared with 50 people per billion passengers in 2022, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) found in its 2023 Safety Report.

Furthermore, the global accident rate decreased to 1,87 accidents per million flights, compared with 2,05 in the previous year.

This improvement in both fatality and accident rates occurred at the same time as an increase in passenger traffic due to post-pandemic recovery.

International passenger traffic increased to about 4,2 billion passengers in 2023, up from 3,2 billion in 2022, and flight departures increased to over 35 million in 2023 compared with around 31 million in 2022.

Africa experienced no fatalities in 2023. Furthermore, it contributed to less than 10% of all international injuries and accidents in scheduled commercial flights.
