Ice age spreads to Durban and Jo'burg

PLANS are under way to build multimillion-rand ski resorts in Midrand, Johannesburg and Durban, shortly after the completion of the current Snowfun Ski Resort in Cape Town in December this year.
This according to Charles Calitz, chairman of Snowfun Developments who reports that building developments on Cape Town's Century City 600-metre slope, Zermatt Indoor Ski Resort, are still on track for its scheduled opening.
The sites for the Durban and Johannesburg indoor ski resorts have been identified and approved and plans are to start building as soon as the Cape Town project is completed.
The Johannesburg development - to be located adjacent to Gallagher Estate in Midrand - will be much larger than its counterparts - featuring a 1 000-metre ski slope.
The new casino site of Simbaya in Durban, approximately four kilometres outside Umhlanga Rocks, is the site of the Snowfun ski development for KwaZulu Natal.
Monex Designs are the appointed architects for all three developments.
Calitz says he is currently negotiating with several overseas developers in California, Singapore, Malaysia and Abu Dhabi to start similar projects in those areas and in so doing, stimulate international competition with the objective of staging an international event.
