Indonesia clamps down on Airbnbs

Indonesia will regulate short-term rentals after Bali Governor Wayan Koster proposed a ban in December, arguing that many properties, predominantly managed by foreign nationals, were operating illegally.

The Indonesian government challenged the proposal, saying short-term rental platforms were essential to advance the country’s tourism sector.

Instead of banning short-term rentals, the government said it would regulate unlicensed tourism accommodations, ensuring operators obtained the necessary permits.

Accommodation marketed on online platforms is required to obtain a permit by March 31. Those that that fail to comply will be delisted from the platforms.
