JAL debuts clothing rental service

Japan Airlines has teamed up with Sumitomo Corporation to provide rentable clothing to tourists and business passengers. The aim is to reduce baggage weight, fuel usage and resultant carbon emission on flights, reports the Financial Express.

The Any Wear, Anywhere Clothing Share Service, currently being trialled until the end of August 2024, is meant to provide convenience and encourage sustainable practices among visitors.

Passengers can rent up to eight outfits for up to two weeks for ¥4 000-¥7 000 (R530-R930). Based on size and seasonal requirements, these can be reserved prior to boarding a JAL flight. It is recommended that clothes are booked a month in advance.

The anywearanywhere.store website can be used to pay for the items and to get instructions for collection of rented clothes.

Sumitomo is developing the reservation system and organising procurement, laundering and delivery of the clothes, while JAL is monitoring the service’s effect on the changes in weight of passengers’ checked-in luggage, weight of the aircraft and resultant change in carbon dioxide emissions by aircraft.
