Japan’s transport authority recently announced price hikes of over 50% for Japan train passes nationwide, as well as certain regional Japan Railways (JR) Group train passes from October, reports travelmole.com.

Passes for JR East and JR central, which include Tokyo, Nagano and Tohoku, will see the biggest increase.

The five-day Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass, which covers trips between Nagoya Takayama and Osaka with Kanazawa, will increase by 39%.

The rail passes in other regions such as JR Kyushu and JR Hokkaido are also going up but by only 5%, from JPY19 000 (R2 410) to JPY20 000 (R2 535).

The JR nationwide 14-day pass, covering all trains across the country is priced at JPY80 000 (R10 145), up from the current JPY47 250 (R5 990).

JR Group said as the price hikes come into effect, more destinations would be covered by the passes. This will also boost the number of seats allocated for passes allowing unlimited rail travel.
