Lisbon to double tourist taxes

Lisbon City Council has approved an increase in overnight tourist taxes and taxes for arrivals by sea, which will come into effect in 30 days, following a public consultation period.

Following the implementation of tourist taxes for arrivals by sea earlier this month, the council has proposed an increase to improve the quality of tourism in the city through urban cleaning, transport, and infrastructure projects.

The €2 (R40) nightly tourism fee, which applies to all accommodation, with the exception of campsites, will increase by 100% to €4 (R80) per night.

The tourist tax on arrivals by sea will also increase by 100% from €1 (R20) to €2 (R40). This fee applies to all tourists who disembark from a cruise ship in Lisbon, regardless of whether or not they stay in the city overnight.

“This option to increase the tourist tax is the result of the conclusion that tourism in Lisbon today needs to contribute more and better to the quality of life in our city. And thus also raise the quality for the tourists who come to see us,” said Carlos Moedas, Mayor of Lisbon.
