Lufthansa trials long-haul Green Fares

On November 30, the Lufthansa Group began trialling its Green Fares on intercontinental flights to test global demand for sustainable travel options.

Previously, on Lufthansa’s regional routes, Green Fares received more than half a million participant passengers.

"The growing demand for our Green Fares shows that more and more people want to travel as sustainably as possible. We support them with suitable offers. The Green Fares test on long-haul flights will provide us with important insights for the further development of our portfolio for more sustainable travel," says Christina Foerster, Member of the Lufthansa Group Executive Board responsible for Brand & Sustainability.

The Green Fares include full offsetting of individual, flight-related CO₂ emissions using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and contributions to Lufthansa's high-quality climate protection and compensation projects, including the most recent technology-based project for long-term binding of CO₂ emissions.

One of the climate protection and compensation projects that the Green Fares contribute to is Lufthansa partner, SQUAKE's, Permanent CO₂ Removal technology. Using Climework's ‘direct air capture’ technology the sites directly remove carbon from the air and put it back underground to deposit as stone, permanently binding the carbon.

In contrast to offsets which compensate for carbon already released, the carbon removal sites physically remove emitted carbon from the air.

Lufthansa's other providers include myclimate, Climate Austria and ClimatePartner.

The long-haul Green Fares are available on the following routes:

  • Frankfurt-Bengaluru
  • Munich-Seoul
  • Brussels-Kinshasa
  • Zurich-Los Angeles
  • Frankfurt-Miami
  • Singapore-London
  • São Paulo-Zurich
  • Nairobi-Frankfurt
  • Bangkok-Vienna
  • Hong Kong-London
  • London-Hong Kong
  • Paris-Bangkok
