Machu Picchu reopens

16 Feb 2023
Comments | 0

Machu Picchu will reopen this week following its closure on January 21 due to the political unrest in Peru.

Wanderlust reports that it is officially reopening on February 15, with a maximum of 2 500 travellers allowed to visit each day.

Inca Rail’s Ollantaytambo-Machu Picchu and Machu Picchu-Hidro-Electrica services began operating at reduced capacity last week and are expected to return to normal capacity by February 20.

Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Lima, Northern Peru, Arequipa, Colca Canyon and the coastal regions have already fully reopened.

According to Danny Callaghan, CEO of the Latin American Travel Association, although the reopening is a step forward, there are still some sporadic roadblocks as well as reduced air services in the country, and operators should build some flexibility into their itineraries for the time being.
