Acsa has allocated approximately R310 million for a major terminal expansion at George Airport, doubling its passenger capacity from 900 000 to about two million passengers per year.

Construction is expected to begin in October 2026, with completion estimated by July 2028. The project will include upgrades to the check-in area, baggage processing, and security screening. Enhancements will also be made to the departure lounge, boarding gates, and arrivals baggage claim, as well as the public concourse, retail outlets, airline offices, and commercial lounge spaces.

“The terminal refurbishment will affect key passenger processing areas such as the check-in, arrivals baggage hall and departure lounge, however Acsa is committed to minimising operational disruptions,” said the airports company.

Outside the terminal, the airport’s frontage roadway and landside parking areas will also be upgraded.

The construction of the ARFF Emergency and Perimeter Road upgrade projects is expected to commence in November 2025 and February 2026 respectively, while the rehabilitation of Runway 11/29 will commence in October 2026.

Acsa has also approved R9,4 million in capital expenditure to upgrade Instrument Landing Systems on the runway from Category 1 to Category 2. Work on this project will commence in May 2026 and is set to be completed by November 2026.
