Mexico has rejected Royal Caribbean Group’s plans for its Perfect Day Mexico private destination following opposition from environmental advocates.
According to Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the project did not meet certain environmental requirements.
Factors that led to the decision included the presence of mangrove vegetation, the absence of sufficient analysis on possible effects on aquatic and reef ecosystems, and insufficient prevention, mitigation and environmental compensation measures.
As a result, Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources of Mexico, Alicia Bárcena announced last week that the Perfect Day project would not be approved.
“The plaintiff formally submitted the withdrawal of the environmental assessment procedure for the Perfect Day project, so the General Directorate of Environmental Impact and Risk carried out the corresponding administrative actions to conclude the procedure,” said the Ministry in a statement.
Perfect Day Mexico, an 81-hectare island experience was to open in Mahahual, Quintana Roo in late 2027. The destination was expected to feature North and South America's tallest waterslide tower, the world’s longest lazy river and Royal Caribbean’s largest Splashaway Bay for kids
