Residents of Port Venezia have asked authorities to address the destination’s disruptive nightlife, resulting in a ban on the sale of takeaway drinks and food at certain times.
The temporary ban prohibits night revellers from purchasing takeaway drinks or food from shops, stalls and bars with outdoor seating and vending machines.
The ban is effective from midnight to 06h00 on weekdays and from 01h30 to 06h00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and will be in place until at least November 19, reports euronews.com.
Residents sued the town hall for noise caused by nightlife, and the Lazzaretto Residents Committee urged officials to act. The ban covers the nightlife area of Porta Venezia, from Oberdan to Via Melzo and Via Lazzaretto.
“This idea of the 24-hour city in which there are no opening hours, always open, no longer convinces me,” Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala told Italian news agency Ansa after hearing the complaints. “I believe that cities should also rest like us humans, and have timetables that are a little more suitable for everyone.”
In July 2022 and June this year, after-hours takeaway drinks were banned in the city to reduce noise and crime.
“We don’t want to penalise fun, nor work and entrepreneurial activities,” said Marco Granelli, Milan’s Councillor for Security. “However, we must allow residents to rest and all citizens to enjoy a quality public space in safety.”
