Monday Smile: Unlikely friendship between hippo and elephant

An orphaned hippo and elephant have formed an unlikely friendship at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Kaluku Unit in Kenya, where both are being rehabilitated before their return to the wild.

Bumpy the hippo and Wangalla the elephant are among the Trust’s youngest rescues, having both been saved as newborns. Although hippos and elephants would not typically spend time together in the wild, the pair have become inseparable, growing up side by side during their rehabilitation.

Sheldrick Wildlife Trust says the friendship is a heartwarming but temporary chapter in their lives, as both animals will eventually develop natural instincts that will lead them back to their own species in the wild.
