Moz border remains closed

Mozambique’s opposition leader, his whereabouts currently unknown, has called on his supporters to “occupy” Maputo.

The main border post between Mozambique and South Africa, Lebombo, has been closed for two days and remained so at the time of going to press on October 7.

After almost a month of growing protests and unrest during which the government throttled Internet services, police used live ammunition to quell protests and 24 people are reported to have died, calm has not yet been restored. Mondlane, the opposition leader who left the country on October 21, has massive support among unemployed youth.

Mozambique’s Defence Chief has warned of a plot to illegally seize power, according to daily online news publication Club of Mozambique.

The country’s Supreme Court gave the electoral commission until yesterday to explain discrepancies in the numbers in the three different elections in October – presidential, parliamentary and provincial assemblies.
