Mozambique banking blackout over

The ‘blackout’ of Mozambique’s financial system, which left most ATMs, debit, and credit cards issued by Mozambican banks unusable, is reportedly over.

Sources contacted by eTNW said that, from their side at least, the banking systems were back to normal.

Bloomberg reported Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário on Wednesday as saying: “The system is working. However, we urge stakeholders to ensure the implementation of a long-lasting and sustainable system.”

Media reports suggest that the blackout was the result of a payment and contract dispute between Portuguese software provider, BizFirst, and Sociedade Interbancaria de Moçambique (SIMO), which is responsible for the payment of the services.

While the crisis may be over, travellers are still advised to carry some cash with them when visiting Mozambique.
