New rail service planned for LaGuardia

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has outlined plans to construct a new rail line linking LaGuardia Airport with Manhattan.

Air Train LGA, which would connect the airport to a new Willets Point station on the Long Island railroad and the New York subway system, is expected to cost over US$2bn (R29bn). The link would allow a 30-minute one-way trip from the airport to midtown Manhattan.

The plan also calls for an overhaul of the Air Train that serves Newark International Airport and for a $13bn (R192bn) rebuilding project at JFK International Airport.

The construction projects remain contingent upon environmental review.
