American Airlines has started testing new technology at three airports across the US that aims to stop passengers cutting in line during the boarding process.

The system emits an audible signal, prompting a gate agent to direct the passenger back to their correct group.

The goal is to improve boarding efficiency and help ensure priority boarding benefits are respected.

The system addresses a common issue where passengers crowd the gate area before their turn, often in the hope of securing overhead bin space – a problem that has worsened since checked-in bag fees have led to more carry-ons.

American Airlines said in a statement to Associated Press that a gate agent politely lets the customer know they are unable to accept the pass and asks the customer to rejoin the line when their boarding group is called.

“The new technology is designed to ensure customers receive the benefits of priority boarding with ease and helps improve the boarding experience by providing greater visibility into boarding progress for our team,” said the airline.
