ALL SOUTH Africans can now
apply for their passports
and Smart IDs online via the
eHomeAffairs portal.
Previously, online
application was limited to
those between the ages of
30 and 35. Now, there is no
age limit, however first-time
applicants cannot use the
online service.
Thabo Mokgola, media
liaison for the Department
of Home Affairs, said firsttime
applicants would still
need to apply for their
passports and IDs at one
of the 140 Home Affairs
offices equipped for Smart
ID services.
Applicants for passports
and IDs will also now be
able to apply and collect
from the branches of four
major banks of which they
are customers. Customers
of Absa, First National Bank,
Nedbank and Standard
Bank will be able to visit 12
branches in Gauteng and
one in Cape Town to apply
for and collect their Smart
ID cards and passports.
The department is in the
process of rolling out the
new online services to
more banks and Home
Affairs offices around the
country.
