THE International Institute
for Peace through Tourism
(IIPT) together with Skål, the
international association
for travel and tourism
professionals, hosted a Peace
Park Ceremony where they
planted three olive trees at the
local Jukskei Park grounds in
Alexandra.
The initiative is to raise
awareness of tourism
opportunities in Alexandra and
to build a culture of peace in
300 towns, villages and parks
worldwide.
IIPT and Skål planted the
olive trees as a symbol of
peace and to promote values
of tolerance, non violence,
gender equality, human rights
and youth empowerment, as
well as encouraging tourism
in a community that is rich
in South African history and
culture.
Tours in Alexandra include
a visit to the local Jazz on
7th Street jazz café, a visit
to the house where Mandela
stayed for a short time, the old
Kings Cinema and the Msomi
gang headquarters, a 1950s
township gang.
