Pilot wellbeing at core of FlySafair talks

23 Jul 2025

Improved working conditions for pilots is the main concern in the mediation talks that began yesterday, July 23.

FlySafair introduced a new scheduling system that has allegedly changed pilots’ working conditions, which Solidarity claims interferes with adequate rest periods and pilots’ family life.

Solidarity is urging FlySafair to consider more flexible rosters in the meeting supervised by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

Proposals to achieve a settlement include, but are not limited to:

  • Pilots will have at least one weekend off within each five-week timetable cycle, as well as two consecutive days off to rest and spend quality time with families
  • The opportunity for pilots to be able to exchange shifts with colleagues in cases where family responsibilities necessitate such flexibility
  • If they have to fly on their off days, they will be compensated for those off days within the next timetable cycle.

If FlySafair meets Solidarity’s requests, the union is willing to reconsider the salary increase demand and other related issues, and to explore potential compromises.
