Polio vaccine required for India

INDIA will be declared
polio-free by the end
of March as a result of
no polio cases having
been reported in the
past three years. As
a result, the country
has instituted polio
vaccination requirements
for seven countries from
February 14.
Visitors arriving from
Afghanistan, Ethiopia,
Israel, Kenya, Nigeria,
Pakistan and Somalia
will have to produce
written proof of full
vaccination as per the
Indian government’s
new regulations.
Travellers from those
countries must complete
a full course of polio
vaccine, preferably with
oral polio vaccine (OPV).
They are also required
to have received an
additional dose of OPV
at least six weeks prior
to travel. The full course
of the vaccine is valid
for one year.
The World Health
Organisation says this
is a landmark
achievement for India.
The country has been
working to eradicate
the disease for nearly
16 years.
