Qantas has revealed its first Airbus A220 in its new livery showing Aboriginal art as part of the airline’s Flying Art Series.

Maringka Baker is a senior Pitjantjatjara artist from the remote community of Kanpi in South Australia, and she created the design to portray the story of two sisters who journeyed through remote Australia to find their way home.

About 100 painters from the Canadian First Nation design agency, Balarinji, assisted Baker with painting over 20 000 dots over two weeks. Airbus said the intricate design was the most complex livery the aircraft manufacturer had ever completed for this aircraft type.

The aircraft is one of six featured in the Flying Art Series, which was initially launched in 1995.

Other liveries include works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists such as Paddy Bedford, Rene Kulitja and the late Emily Kame Kngwarreye.
