South African Airways will officially return to Malawi on March 16, with ticket sales for the service having already begun on February 6.

Malawi’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently shared the update on its Facebook page.

According to the post, the resumption of flights was announced by SAA CEO, Professor John Lamola, during a meeting held with Her Excellency, Malawi High Commissioner Stella Ndau at the Malawi High Commission in Pretoria. Vimla Maistry, SAA spokeswoman, as well as diplomatic staff were in attendance.

Challenges preventing the resumption of the route have been resolved, according to Professor Lamola. These included a restructure, with one of the focus areas being the promotion of the African Continental Free Trade Area within the SADC region.

Ndau commended SAA for its decision, saying it signified renewed confidence that South African businesses have in the operating environment in Malawi. She also said the resumption of flights would to the improvement of the tourism and transport sectors in the country.

“We are excited with this development, which we believe will ensure that Malawi should remain as one of the most affordable tourist destinations in the region. This will certainly complement Government’s efforts of improving our economy,” said Ndau.

The flights will operate on Mondays and Thursdays, according to separate winter and summer schedules.

The winter schedule will run from March 16 to 25, 2023, and is as follows:

The summer schedule will run from March 30, 2023, until the end of October this year. The schedule is as follows:
