SANParks has advised tourists headed for the Kruger National Park to travel in convoy and take other precautions.
Reacting to the death of a German tourist during an apparent hijacking on Monday, it said in a statement that those headed to the park should plan their trips carefully and only make stops at designated areas such as garages and service stations.
It said Numbi Road was a crime hotspot, but Paul Kruger and Phabeni Gates were fully operational and signposted and could be used as a gateway to other lodges. It is still working on trying to ensure the safety of tourists on all roads leading to the KNP and other tourist destinations in the area while crime is escalating.
Referring to the unfortunate incident on Monday, Kruger Park spokesman, Ike Phaahla, said: “This is a huge setback for the tourism sector and the country. Tourism is a huge employer in a region with some of the highest unemployment rates in the country.”
