Saudi Arabia has unveiled plans for a new international airport in Riyadh.

At the end of last year, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Prime Minister and Chairman of the Council of Economic and Development Affairs, and Chairman of the country’s Public Investment Fund announced the masterplan for the new King Salman International Airport.

According to the fund’s website, the airport is expected to be one of the world’s largest, covering an area of about 57sqkm. It will feature six parallel runways, 12sqkm of residential and recreational facilities, retail outlets, and logistics support service areas.

The airport will achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum certification by incorporating green initiatives into its design. It will be powered by renewable energy.

It plans to accommodate up to 120 million travellers by 2030 and up to 185 million travellers by 2050.
