The Royal Schiphol Group has begun a collaboration with security technology company Pangiam to develop faster hand baggage screening using artificial intelligence (AI).
According to Simple Flying, this will involve algorithms analysing images of hand luggage and identifying prohibited items and security risks.
The technology involved, Project Dartmouth, a collaboration between Pangiam and Google Cloud, named after the 1956 Dartmouth Summer Research Project on artificial Intelligence. Trialled by Glasgow and Aberdeen airports, it uses AI and machine learning models trained to detect prohibited items in real time as bags pass through scanning equipment.
Amsterdam Schiphol is the first major European airport to launch this technology, which will first be tested on a small scale. Once all requirements are met, including European regulations, and trials prove successful, it will be rolled out.
