Singapore opens doorway to Asia Pacific

Singapore has eased its South African travel restrictions and will now allow all travellers with recent travel histories from South Africa to transit through the country.

This means that Singapore Airlines will now be able to accept South African passengers flying onwards to their final destination via a transit stop in Singapore. Singapore Airlines continues to operate SQ479 on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, departing from Johannesburg at 13h45 and arriving in Singapore at 06h10 the next day. SQ478 departs from Singapore on the same days at 01h30 arriving in Johannesburg at 06h10.

But it is only travellers transiting through Changi who are affected, and restrictions for people wanting to enter Singapore from South Africa remain in force.

Sally George, market development manager of Singapore Airlines, said while restrictions for South Africans entering Singapore had not changed, the easing of transiting restrictions meant that South Africans would now have another option to travel onwards to Asia and South West Pacific. Since January, Qatar Airways has been one of the only options for South Africans wanting to travel between South Africa and Australia.

Singapore Airlines flights are open for sale in all GDSs and on the airline’s website.

“We remain committed to serving the South African market and look forward to welcoming South Africans back on board our flights soon,” said Sally.
