Standard Bank eyes travel market with new perks

Standard Bank has expanded its travel offering, with flight discounts of up to 40% for clients as well as their family and friends.

From November, Standard Bank clients will be able to book flights directly through the bank’s app via Standard Bank Travel. The offering will be available to all customers, depending on factors such as their card type and UCount tier level.

There will be no price limit on discounted flight bookings, only a yearly discount cap based on the client’s card for local or overseas flights. All flights in the booking will be discounted, not just the bank customer’s flight.

“For many South Africans, travel becomes unaffordable if discounts don’t extend to family and friends. We’ve removed that barrier by offering transparent base fares and inclusive discounts,” said Chiko Manokore, Head of Personal and Private Banking at Standard Bank.

The bank reports that travel spend in 2024 doubled compared with 2021. Of that spend, 32% went to flight bookings, accounting for 1,5 million transactions, mostly by Private Banking clients. Spend on travel and tour operators and accommodation accounted for 26% and 21% respectively.

Standard Bank says it will roll out a range of new features in due course.
