Belgium-Slovakia rail line
Leo Express, a Czech public transport operator, has announced plans to create a multi-country rail line from Belgium to Slovakia, with stops in Germany and the Czech Republic.
Once approved, Leo Express will launch the service to connect Belgium’s Ostend to Bratislava in Slovakia, and establish a 19-hour direct service with about 50 stops, reports euronews.com.
The train will stop in Bruges, Ghent, Brussels, and Liège in Belgium, followed by over 20 German cities including Aachen, Cologne, Hanover, Leipzig, and Dresden.
It will also make stops in Prague, Kuty and Malacky.
Mexico’s Maya Train
The newest section of Tren Maya linking Cancun to Tulum will open on February 29, reports travelpulse.com.
The Mexican government has invested US$20 billion (R375 billion) in the megaproject, which provides a rail service extending from Cancun to Palenque and offers tourists access to the country’s rich historic sites.
The final leg of the track transports people to the hard-to-reach ruins of Chichen Itza. As hoped by the government, the train is providing increased access to the ancient ruins, which recently broke its single-day attendance record after welcoming more than 7 500 visitors.
Amsterdam Centraal renovation
Amsterdam Centraal train station is undergoing renovations this year, resulting in a partial closure.
Initially, the station expected to partially close for a year, however Eurostar has devised a plan to minimise delays caused by the renovations when crossing borders. It now estimates it will have limited services for six months as it completes the renovation, which will commence from June this year.
On June 14, Eurostar will start transporting non-EU nationals via Brussels for security and passport checks between the UK and the Netherlands using the new Exit-Entry System, reports euronews.com.
