Travel is SA’s new Tinder

A survey by the Flight Centre Travel Group (FCTG) across 4 050 millennials and Gen-Zs aged between 18 and 42 ( it included participants from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK), revealed that the majority of South Africans travel abroad as a way to find love.

The survey reported that 63% of South Africans actively seek romance while travelling abroad. New Zealanders were a close second, with 59% saying that a holiday is the perfect place to find love – significantly higher than respondents from Australia (40%), Canada (41%), and the UK (23%).

“This passion for finding love across borders may stem from South Africans’ sense of adventure and openness to new experiences. The diversity of cultures and landscapes across the globe offers the perfect backdrop for making meaningful connections,” said Euan McNeil, MD of FCTG South Africa.

According to the same report from the group, solo travel is on the rise. 60% of those surveyed said they were “very” or “somewhat” likely to travel alone.

While searching for romance is one of the reasons for this trend, the majority of those interested in solo travel (54%) said they would travel alone to have a soul-searching journey to build self-awareness.

“Our research shows that people are seeking and finding love abroad – with each other, and with themselves,” said James Kavanagh, CEO of FCTG.
