Tube strikes suspended

DRIVERS on London's underground rail network have cancelled a series of strikes planned for later this month and in June, AFP reports. The Rail, Maritime and Transport union initially voted for members to strike between May 16 and May 20 and between June 13 and June 17 over the sacking of two colleagues, Eamonn Lynch and Arwyn Thomas.

Lynch has since won his claim for unfair dismissal while Thomas is taking his case to an employment tribunal.

"This dispute has only ever been about securing justice for our members who have been unfairly dismissed," RMT general secretary Bob Crow said.

"As a result of this agreement, Eamonn Lynch can return to work with his continuity of employment and standard of living protected," he added.

Around 1,500 drivers were due to strike, threatening the worst disruption on the Tube since a series of strikes in late 2010.
