UK hotel lock-up rates soar

Mandatory quarantine in a hotel on arrival in the UK from a red-list country, such as South Africa, will soon become even more costly for travellers.

Only British or Irish nationals and travellers with residence rights in the UK are allowed to enter from red-list countries, but they must spend 10 full days (11 nights) in a hotel, with their day of arrival seen as day zero.

The current full price of hotel quarantine for one adult is £1 750 (R35 000) but from August 12 will rise to £2 285 (R46 000), and from £650 (R13 000) to £1 430 (R29 000) for a second adult (or child over the age of 11) in a shared room.

The additional rate for children aged 5-11 remains unchanged at £325 (R6 500).

The changes come into effect at 04h00 BST on August 12.

The UK Department for Transport said the change in price was to reflect the actual cost of providing secure quarantine facilities, including transport, security, and any welfare services required.
