Wizz Air backs SAF from sewage

Wizz Air has made its first equity investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) research and development with a £5 million (R114,5m) investment in biofuel company, Firefly.

Firefly specialises in a process that converts sewage sludge into SAF. With more than 57 million tonnes of sewage sludge produced in the UK each year, this could produce 250 000 tonnes of SAF.

The partnership is expected to allow the airline to supply 525 000 tonnes of SAF to its UK operations over 15 years starting from 2028, potentially saving 100 000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent each year.

The agreement represents the latest milestone in Wizz Air’s broader sustainability strategy, which includes its fleet renewal plan and already efficient low-cost operations. The airline aims by 2030 to reduce its carbon emissions by 25% per passenger/km.
