1time: It’s official

1time has been granted provisional liquidation by the North Gauteng Court.

Spokesperson for the airline, Refilwe Masemola, however said in a statement that more details could not be disclosed at this stage as the airline was being handed over to an appointed liquidator who will be responsible for all communications.

Being placed under provisional liquidation will allow the airline to keep its operating licence, with trade union Solidarity remaining hopeful that the airline can still be sold.

Marius Croucamp, spokesperson for Solidarity, said that close to 100 workers at Jetworx, 1time’s maintenance arm, were now facing retrenchment as a result of the application for provisional liquidation. Croucamp said that Jetworx had already laid off around 100 of its 400 workers earlier this year before the company was placed under business rescue.

He added that, should a buyer for the airline be found while it is under provisional liquidation, the airline’s 540 workers might be able to get their jobs back. Jetworx would also then again cover the maintenance operations for the airline and would also be able to employ workers.

In an effort to ensure local job creation, Solidarity has appealed to South African aviation companies to contract their maintenance work to local companies such as Jetworx instead of outsourcing it to overseas companies.
