South African National Parks (SANParks) has reopened the majority of its roads following significant rainfall earlier this month, as reported by Travel News. While most routes have reopened, some areas remain inaccessible due to flooding and road damage.
The H4-2 road from Lower Sabie to Skukuza Rest Camp is now accessible via the Nwatindlopfu high-water bridge. However, the direct road to Crooks Corner is completely flooded due to the Limpopo River’s rise and Punda Maria Gate is closed because of a sub-grade road failure. Visitors heading to the park’s northern regions are advised to use the Pafuri Gate as an alternative.
In the Tshokwane area, most gravel roads have reopened with the exception of the S33, which remains closed due to high water levels at the causeway. Visitors travelling from Skukuza to Lower Sabie can use the H10 route via Tshokwane. The Sand and Sabie low-level bridges, previously obstructed by debris, are now passable.
In the central and southern regions, Talamati Bushveld Camp reopened to visitors on January 17. Balule River Camp is only accessible from the south via the Olifants River high-water bridge as the low-water bridge remains impassable. All other bushveld camps are open and accessible.
Although the rains have eased, SANParks’ disaster management team continues to monitor conditions across the park. Visitors are urged to exercise caution, particularly on gravel roads and at low-level bridge crossings.
