Thai airports to hike tax

The Thai Civil Aviation Board has approved a 53% increase in passenger service charges for outbound passengers on international flights.

According to the Bangkok Post, the board approved an application by Airports of Thailand (AOT) to up the charge from THB730 (R390) to THB1 120 (R600). The passenger charge for domestic flights will remain at THB130 (R70).

The passenger service charge is expected to come into effect early next year and will be included in the fare at the time of purchase.

In its application, the AOT said it expected the increase to generate an additional THB10 billion (R5 billion) per year, based on an average passenger traffic of 35 million per annum through its six airports.

The Civil Aviation Board said the proceeds would be used to improve the airports’ services, safety and facilities.

AOT operates six major airports, including Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Don Mueang, Hat Yai and Chiang Rai international airports.
