Airports begin lifting EU liquid limits

29 Jul 2025

The EU has approved new security measures that allow passengers to carry up to two litres of liquid in their hand luggage, provided airports have the correct scanners in place.

Laptops and other electronics may also remain in the luggage during screening.

Until now, the 100ml rule applied to all liquids, aerosols, and gels in hand luggage as traditional X-ray machines were unable to effectively detect liquid explosives if liquids went over 100ml. Now, the European Civil Aviation Conference has tested and approved new machines to scan liquids and electronics more accurately, reports Euronews.

After the announcement was made, Rome Fiumicino, Milan Linate, Milan Malpensa and other Italian airports announced that the 100ml rule had been lifted.

Other European airports are likely to implement the new rule over the coming days or when the new scanners have been installed and approved. However, not all EU airports are equipped with the new system, meaning passengers may still be subject to the 100ml restrictions.
