Amsterdam bans new hotels

Amsterdam has banned the construction of new hotels as part of a policy to reduce overtourism and improve living conditions for locals.

The new measure prohibits the construction of any new hotels unless they are replacing old hotels that have closed. Even then, the new hotels’ bed count may not exceed that of its predecessors to maintain an accommodation capacity quota and must be better in terms of sustainability and modernity.

“We want to make and keep the city liveable for residents and visitors,” read a statement from the local government, which also noted that the city would cap overnight stays at 20 million per year.
