Catalonia has approved an increase in the regional tourist tax, doubling the cost for visitors in Barcelona.
From April 1, the regional tax will increase from €3,50 (R67) to €7 (R133) for five-star hotels, from €1,70 (R32) to €3,40 (R65) for four-star hotels, from €2,25 (R43) to €4,50 (R86) for holiday lets, from €2 (R38) to €4 (R76) for cruise passengers visiting more than 12 hours, and from €3 (R57) to €6 (R114) for passengers visiting for less than 12 hours.
The taxes will be charged per person per night.
In addition to the regional tax, Barcelona also charges its own City Council Tax, which is set at €5 (R95) per night this year. This tax increases by €1 (R19) every year until 2029, when it should cost €8 (R152).
Tourists in Barcelona are required to pay both taxes.
