Shamwari Private Game Reserve has welcomed a second meerkat, a juvenile male, into its rehabilitation programme. He was originally discovered alone on a farm in the Northern Cape after being found next to a roadside.
He was raised for several months by well-intentioned locals and later surrendered to Exotic Animal World in the Western Cape, which then contacted Shamwari. A team from the National Airways Corporation and Shamwari Air Shuttle collaborated to ensure the safe transfer of the meerkat to Shamwari’s facilities.
His arrival will be followed by a full veterinary and behavioural assessment before he is gradually introduced to the reserve’s resident meerkats, including Mia – a former Exotic Animal World rescue who was also relocated to the reserve.
He is said be in good physical health and is food-driven, a positive indicator for future foraging development. Meerkats are by nature social creatures so it is hoped his introduction to a new colony will see him begin to thrive.
