Argentina tops rand-friendly destinations

South African travellers get more bang for their buck when travelling to Argentina, according to independent comparison platform, Finder.

The Argentinian peso is ranked the most rand-friendly currency on a list of 10 of the cheapest currencies for South Africans in 2020.

To compile the list, Finder compared exchange rates via XE.com on January 1, 2019 with those on January 1, 2020. They then ranked the currencies that showed the greatest growth for the South African rand, excluding any destinations that were noted as high risk level on travelriskmap.com.

The rand is 64% stronger against the Argentinian peso than it was at the same time last year. That means R1 000 is now worth an additional ARS1 658.

Uruguay ranks second, with the rand increasing 17% against the Uruguayan peso. For every R1 000, South Africans will gain an extra UYU389.

Four South American countries featured on the list, making it the more dominant region. These included Paraguay (11% growth of PYG45 875) and Chile (9% growth of CLP4 294).

Turkey ranked third, with Paraguay fourth and Chile in fifth position. Mauritius came in sixth. The Mauritian rupee is 8% weaker against the rand this year.

Sweden, Hungary, Dominican Republic and Romania filled the seventh to tenth positions as most rand-friendly destinations.
