Asia cruises open new MICE opportunities

ROYAL Caribbean is betting big on Asia for the 2027- 2028 season, unveiling expanded deployments from Singapore and China that are expected to create fresh opportunities for the South African incentives, conferences and events market. Represented in South Africa by Cruises International , the cruise line’s new Asia programme combines destination-rich itineraries and flexible fly-cruise access, positioning the region as an increasingly attractive option for South African corporates and event planners. An important selling point for South Africans is the e-visas for Japan. According to Boipelo Cholo, Business Development Manager for MICE at Cruises International, the new deployments aboard Quantum of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas reflect growing demand for experience-driven incentives and corporate events. “South African clients don’t want just another conference. They don’t want another incentive that feels like a meeting in disguise. They want something that wows their teams, justifies the budget and delivers real impact,” Cholo told Travel News. Singapore From October 2027 to March 2028, Quantum of the Seas will once again be based in Singapore, operating voyages ranging from three to 10 nights. The programme includes shorter regional sailings to destinations such as Penang and Phuket, as well as longer itineraries to Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Hong Kong. Extended voyages into Japan will call at cities including Tokyo, Nagoya and Kobe, where travellers can experience contrasting urban cultures, culinary traditions and historic landscapes. “For South African travellers, Singapore’s excellent air connectivity and streamlined entry process make it an ideal fly cruise hub into Asia,” added Cholo. Seasonal Royal Caribbean has also expanded its China deployment for the 2027- 2028 season aboard Spectrum of the Seas, with sailings departing from Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo. The programme covers 22 destinations across Asia, with itineraries ranging from three to eleven nights. Many of these sailings are built around seasonal experiences, allowing guests to explore Asia at its most visually and culturally rich times of year. Destinations include the Japanese ports of Tokyo, Osaka, Nagasaki, Kagoshima and Sapporo (Muroran), alongside South Korean calls at Busan and Jeju (Seogwipo), and Vietnamese destinations including Da Nang (Chan May) and Hue. Selected itineraries will feature overnight stays in key cities such as Beijing, Osaka and Tokyo, allowing travellers more time ashore. New one-way sailings between Tokyo and China also create added flexibility for travellers who want to combine multiple countries in a single trip, rather than returning to the same port. E-visas A major selling point for South African travellers is Japan’s cruise e-visas, which allow guests visiting Japanese ports as part of a cruise itinerary to apply for e-visas rather than traditional visas. Cholo believes the deployments will resonate strongly with the South African MICE market, particularly as companies increasingly prioritise experiential incentives over traditional conference formats. “With new Asian sailings aboard Quantum of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas, Royal Caribbean is unlocking a powerful opportunity for the South African incentives and events market. These are not just cruises; they are fully integrated event environments,” she said. Simplicity Cholo highlighted the operational simplicity of cruise-based events, noting that accommodation, meeting and event spaces, built-in dining, entertainment, and networking spaces were all integrated within a single ecosystem, making onboard events smarter, more efficient and more impactful. “Flights. Hotels. Venues. Suppliers. Cruising simplifies everything.” The itineraries are designed around high-impact experiences, including Japan’s cherry blossom season, cultural immersion across China and Vietnam, and tropical destinations in Thailand and Malaysia. “These are experiences that go beyond the boardroom and that’s exactly what South African corporate clients are looking for. Bookings for Royal Caribbean’s 2027-2028 Asia season are now open – and demand is already building,” said Cholo
