Bag-bots enter Schiphol

22 Aug 2023

Following a two-week trial in June, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport will buy 19 baggage robots to take over the physically heavy element of baggage management in the airport.

During their trial, the baggage robots were lifting over 90% of the airport’s trial baggage. By the time the robots are fully integrated, the airport expects they will lift 80-90% of all baggage.

The first baggage robot will be introduced to the airport in the Northern hemisphere autumn and the remaining 18 robots will be implemented by no later than 2024.

“The focus at Schiphol must once again be on people, so it’s important that we improve the working conditions of baggage handlers. These robots do just that. They are the best available anywhere in the world and the tests we have done have shown that they really make things easier for the staff in the baggage basement,” said Ruud Sondag, CEO of Royal Schiphol Group.
