Baggage tracking improves delivery by 66%

Airlines with baggage tracking have seen an improvement in bag delivery globally, according to air transport IT and communications company, SITA.

The SITA 2019 Baggage IT Insights, officially launched at an event in Abu Dhabi, showed that, where tracking was done at check-in and loading on to the aircraft, baggage delivery had improved by up to 66%.

SITA’s results come after a record drop in the global rate of mishandled baggage over the past decade, with a rate steady at around 5,7 bags per thousand passengers over the past three years.

The SITA report notes that automation and other new technologies have led to the total number of mishandled bags plummeting between 2007 and 2018, from 46.9 million to 24.8 million, even as passenger numbers have risen by 76%.

Over the past year, an increasing number of airlines and airports have introduced tracking at key points in the journey – check-in, loading on to the aircraft, transfers and arrival – to improve baggage management and reduce the chance of a bag being mishandled.
