THE survey asked respondents
if they think their salary is
less, the same, or more than
consultants with the same level of
knowledge and expertise.
Few consultants that are new to
the industry, with less than 2 years’
experience, believe their salary to
be higher than others’ with the same
experience. Their colleagues, who
have over 20 years’ experience, are
four times more likely to feel that their
package is better than what other,
similarly qualified people are paid.
Among the 981 participants in the
Industry Employment Conditions
Survey undertaken by TNW in March,
772 people working in travel agencies
responded to the question.
Only 4,8% of 84 people with
less than 2 years’ experience felt
their package was more than other
consultants with the same level of
experience. However, when compared
with the 204 respondents with more
than 20 years’ experience, the
results were significantly different:
19,1% of these respondents felt
they were getting more than others
with the same level of knowledge
and experience.
A rude shock awaits the next
bracket (two-five years’ experience)
when the 65% percent of agents who
thought they were paid a market rate,
plummets to 31% and the number who
thought they were paid less than the
market rate, soars from 30% to 55%
Commission-earning agents are quite
confident that they are earning the
same or more than their colleagues
with the same level of experience.
69% feel they earn the same or
more compared with 46% of noncommission
earners. The percentage
at 69% is 50% higher than the
percentage of 46% among noncommission
earners.
Of the 691 consultants that
answered the question, the
consultants earning commission
were more than twice as likely to
feel they earned more than their
colleagues (18,3%) than the
non-commission earners (8,1%)
that felt the same way.
Travel consultants living at the coast
are the most content, especially in
the Cape.
The percentage of respondents
in the Cape that feel their salary
is more than other consultants is
19,3%, which is 75% higher than the
percentage (11%) of consultants in
Gauteng.
People working in KZN agencies have
the highest percentage of agents who
perceive their salaries to be neither
higher nor lower than their colleagues
with the same level of experience.
