More than 70 wildfires are raging across Australia, now threatening the western suburbs of Sydney.
The fire, which has been affecting popular tourist areas and travel, is now causing thick smog across Sydney. The Sydney Airport region is under extreme fire warning
“It’s only a matter of hours before we see a flare-up in fire activity and a breach of these tenuous containment strategies,” says Shane Fitzsimmons, Rural Fire Service (RFS) commissioner in Sydney.
Qantas has issued a statement to say that the fires have disrupted the travel arrangements for a number of Qantas pax travelling to and from Sydney and Newcastle. There are a variety of options for affected pax, including rebooking or rerouting, free of charge. Flight statuses for Qantas can be checked here.
At Sydney Airport, operations continue as normal at this stage. Flights can be checked here.
Destination NSW has recommended that visitors check the latest bushfire information before travelling in the area as there may be road closures or restricted access to some areas. Those planning on heading to the Blue Mountains are being told to stay away. Info can be found here.
